Standards in Search Engine Optimization, Are There Any?
Talking about search engine optimization nowadays, one cannot escape the question of whether there are standards of practices being followed in the implementation of SEO. This technique has been already in the industry since the beginning of search engines in the world wide web. But are there any standards for experts to follow and what are the complications when there is none?
There are a couple or more standards in the implementation of search engine optimization but it is merely different and backed by different SEO organizations. One standard of one organization is not the same standard compared with another organization. In other words, there is no general standard in the implementation of search engine optimization strategies that governed by an international governing body. But one fact about one organization existed that is almost in the credibility of approaching an internationally recognized body called the Search Engine Professionals Association or simply SEMPO. It is a global non-profit organization where search engine marketing industry and marketing professionals connect to. But still this organization doesn’t serve as the governing body to implement an overall standard for SEO implementation.
The existence of no credible standard for SEO implementation allowed some people to make truly bogus accusations and outrageous claims. Some anonymous users who claimed to be a part of one organization posted some serious but false accusations online with regards to the services of some very reputable SEO firms or companies. This is just one of the reasons SEO industry needs a good and credible standard to avoid things happening like this one. An SEO firm or company should be criticized not by the standard of anyone who knows something about search engine optimization but by the general standard followed by the industry.
Another reason why this industry needs a credible standard is that there are companies engaging in SEO services that took the opportunity to developed their own standard and label it as recognized by a national body or organization. They also provide their own certifications if professionals wanted to be certified for this industry. The complication of this on the part of a certified professional is that other companies or employers might not merit or give more credit to these certifications since it is not really an internationally recognized standard but by the standard of the company who developed these certifications.
An industry that fails to recognize the mistakes it made and do not learn from it, will be subject to an inevitable business bedlam in some of its areas. Thus, it is a need for this industry to develop a coherent standard.
